Lexington Theological Seminary (LTS) announces Prophetic Preaching for a Planet in Peril: Homiletics for the Ecological Crisis, co-edited by Rev. Dr. HyeRan Kim-Cragg, Principal and Professor of Preaching at Emmanuel College, University of Toronto, and Rev. Dr. Leah D. Schade, Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship at LTS, is now under contract with Wipf & Stock’s Cascade imprint.

As ecological crises increasingly impact congregations and communities worldwide, the book will offer essential biblical, theological, ethical, and homiletical foundations for Christian preaching in this urgent moment. Featuring twelve chapters and four sermons aligned with the liturgical calendar, Prophetic Preaching will provide both deep theoretical insights and practical models for preaching that addresses climate change and environmental justice with clarity, creativity, and courage.

Kim-Cragg and Schade have co-convened the workgroup “Preaching, Environment, and Climate Crisis” of the Academy of Homiletics (AOH) since 2022. Schade served as President of AOH in 2024; Kim-Cragg will serve as president in 2028.

Kim-Cragg was appointed the 14th principal of Emmanuel College in 2022 and is the first racialized person to lead the institution and to be promoted to full professor (in 2021) in the college’s nearly 100-year history. As a leading postcolonial scholar in homiletics, Kim-Cragg is committed to an interdisciplinary approach to homiletics as a subdiscipline of practical theology. She is the author of fifteen books, including Moments in Time (2024), Practical Theology Amid Environmental Crises (2023), Postcolonial Preaching (2021), and Interdependence (2018). Her articles dealing with the climate crisis and preaching have been published in Religions and Global Religion and Climate Crisis (2026).

Schade is an ordained Lutheran minister (ELCA) for twenty-five years who has authored or co-edited seven books, including Creation Crisis Preaching (2016) and Rooted and Rising: Voices of Courage in a Time of Climate Crisis (2019). She is the EcoPreacher blogger for Patheos and has served as an anti-fracking and climate activist, community organizer, and advocate for environmental justice issues. She is currently the grant director for the $1.25 million project “Compelling Preaching for a Climate-Changed World” at LTS in partnership with The BTS Center and Creation Justice Ministries.

The book explores major themes of ecological justice, Creation care, and spiritual renewal through the lens of Christian preaching, weaving together reflections on scripture, seasonal liturgy, environmental stewardship, and social justice to inspire faith communities toward healing and hope for a wounded Earth.

Contributors to Prophetic Preaching include a diverse and distinguished group of homileticians and faith leaders: Ronald J. Allen, Courtney V. Buggs, Sam Codington, Susan Fleming McGurgan, Jerusha Matsen Neal, Yonatan Neril, Katrina J. Olson, David Latimore, Namjoong Kim, HyeRan Kim-Cragg, Xavier L. Johnson, Melanie Harris, Carolyn J. Sharp, Leah D. Schade, Kimberly Wagner, Lis Valle-Ruiz, and Rhody Walker-Lenow.

The book will be published in 2027 with pre-orders available in late 2026.
